Raymond Pettibon

Raymond Pettibon (b. 1957, United States) uses the vast variety of American high and low culture in his works, touching upon every possible subject – sports, television, sexuality, youth culture, religion, history and politics. Working in gouache and ink on paper, Pettibon’s style seems swift, reminiscent of comic strips and caricatures, forming bold images that often combine images and texts. As part of the 1970s Californian punk rock wave, Pettibon created posters, record covers and fanzines for musicians and bands. He began exhibiting his work in art spaces only in the 1990’s, and by the new millennium had gained wide recognition as an artist, with exhibitions at Documenta in Kassel, the Venice Biennial and numerous museums in the United States and Europe.
